AirAsia Mandates Vaccine Check-ins Through App Only

More airlines are deciding to require that all passengers are fully vaccinated. AirAsia is the latest to take this step, following the example of Air Canada, Air New Zealand, and Qantas. However, AirAsia is taking a unique approach to their proof of vaccination. They are also pushing their app and decreasing contact at airports by requiring that most passengers check-in through their app.

Check-in at the counter is still available, but only if you meet certain requirements. For example, if you have children under the age of two traveling in your party, have reduced mobility, or are a minor who is traveling alone, counter check-in is preapproved. However, if you just want to check-in at the counter and don’t meet the requirements, you’re going to pay for it.

Using the app, you can start the check-in process up to two weeks before your flight. One crucial step is to upload proof that you are fully vaccinated. The app walks you through the process. There are also contactless kiosks at the airport for taking care of the rest of the process.

Of course, there are some complications to this type of mandate. For example, it may be impossible to receive a vaccination if a traveler is under a certain age. As a result, the airline is making a concession for passengers under the age of 18. However, this is only in effect if the unvaccinated minor is traveling with a vaccinated passenger. Fully vaccinated minors are still allowed to travel alone if they meet the rest of the airline’s requirements for solo travel.
